All members of the bridge team involved in navigating, such as deck officers and Masters, on board vessels travelling in cold climates.

Learning Objectives
• Identify the main hazards of cold climates
• Recognise the different types and classes of sea ice
• Identify the precautions needed when navigating close to or within sea ice
• Recognise how to navigate with icebreaker assistance and in convoys
• Recognise the effect of low air temperatures on equipment
• Recognise how topside icing occurs and influences the ship
• Identify signs of low-pressure areas and list options to weather storms
• Select best practices for navigating in fog
• Identify additional hazards in polar areas
• Identify precautions needed in areas with icebergs
• Recognise the role and limitations of weather forecasts
• Identify required personal protection equipment and life-saving arrangements for cold climates[
Assessment
Course assessment has two attempts with a 70% pass mark
